Antigua-flagged ship hijacked by pirates

The Antigua and Barbuda-flagged cargo vessel the MV Victoria has been hijacked by eight pirates in the Gulf of Aden, government officials say.

The Antigua and Barbuda government said in a statement Wednesday the ship was on its way to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, when it was hijacked and steered in the direction of the Somali port of Eyl, the organization Ecoterra International reported.

The non-government organization said the official statement gave no details about the fate of the ship's crew, which believed to be all Romanian.

Lt. Nate Christensen, a spokesman for the U.S. 5th Fleet based in Bahrain, said the MV Victoria was seized Tuesday in an area 75 miles south of Yemen.

Andrew Mwangura of the East African Seafarers Assistance Program in Mombasa, Kenya, said the crew are unhurt, Ecoterra reported.
