Somalia: Fresh fighting erupts in Mogadishu

Fresh between government forces and allied al-Shabab and Hisbul Islam fighters has started in Yaqshid district in north Mogadishu, witnesses said on Monday.

The fighting started after the Islamists launched heavy attack to the bases of government soldiers and the two sides are using heavy machine guns and mortars.

A base of African Union troops was also attacked on Monday after insurgents attacked. Former Jalle Siad Academy, a base of Burundian troops was attacked but no casualties have been reported.

The sound of mortars and heavy gun fire could be heard in the Somali capital Mogadishu.

More residents are pouring to the long road between Afgoye and Mogadishu where the civilians had fled during the Ethiopian occupation.

Monday’s fighting comes as the most contested bases of south Mogadishu have fallen to the hands of the Islamist rebels.
