The U.N. Security Council is condemning the recent upsurge in fighting in Somalia led by extremists and is giving its strong support to the country's new government.
A statement approved Friday by all 15 council members demands that opposition groups immediately end their offensive, renounce violence and join reconciliation efforts.
It singles out for criticism al-Shabab, an insurgent group seeking to overthrow the Western-backed government and establish an Islamic state.
The council expresses concern at reports that neighboring Eritrea has supplied arms to opponents of the government in violation of a U.N. arms embargo.
