"No Regard" For Civilians In Somali Fighting - UN Refugee Body

Armed rebels and pro-government militiamen in Somalia are fighting with little concern for civilians, the U.N. refugee agency said Tuesday, calling it a "clear violation of humanitarian principles."

"The manner in which civilians are being victimized by this conflict is unacceptable," William Spindler, spokesman for United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said.

"Parties to the conflict in Mogadishu are fighting with no regard for the safety of civilians in clear violation of international humanitarian and human rights principles," he added.

On May 7, an insurgency spearheaded by the radical Shebab group Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys' Hezb al-Islamiya militia launched a major nationwide offensive to remove the country's president, Sharif Ahmed, from power.

More than 250 people, civilians and combatants, have been killed and around 100,000 displaced by the latest bout of fighting.
