Somalia President: Al-Qaeda Trying to Establish Strategic Presence in Somalia

The President of Somalia’s Transitional Federal Government (TFG) said that Al-Qaeda wants to establish a strategic presence in Somalia so that it can use Somalia to launch attacks on other countries.

Speaking to Voice of America Radio, the President said that after establishing military presence in Afghanistan and Pakistan, Al-Qaeda leaders have decided to come to countries like Somalia so that they can recruit new followers and expand their presence outside Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The President said that Islamic militants who are fighting his government receive support from Al-Qaeda and Eritrea and intend on perpetuating lawlessness and chaos in Somalia in order to use it as a safe haven.

The President said that his government will not allow Somalia to become a safe haven for terrorists and a spring board for attacks on other countries and that his government will defeat those who are bent on the continuation of suffering in Somalia.

The President added that groups fighting his government are not willing to resolve the country’s problems through negotiation and peaceful means and that they are a front for foreign interests.

The President’s remarks come soon after the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) said that it can see the first signs of Al-Qaeda fighters shifting focus to Horn of Africa and Yemen.
