Gunmen killed four Somali police officers and wounded a fifth in a drive-by shooting in the capital Mogadishu on Wednesday, the police said.
The attack happened in the south of the capital while the police were off-duty, police Colonel Mohamed Sahal said.
"The four policemen were off duty when they were shot dead by unidentified militants this afternoon and we are still investigating the incident," said Sahal, adding it was the first incident of its kind this year.
Witnesses said the police came under attack from gunmen who appeared to be members of the radical Islamist Shebab, which is fighting government forces and African Union peacekeepers. They said the gunmen were aboard two vehicles, one of which was equipped with a heavy machine-gun.
Somalia has had no effective central authority since the 1991 ouster of former president Mohamed Siad Barre.
