The Liberal candidate for the seat of Seymour, Mike Laker, has pulled out of the election race.
Mr Laker was accused on MTR radio of telling voters Somali refugees would move into the electorate.
He admitted linking Somali refugees with public housing in the area, but denied he was exploiting asylum seekers for political purposes.
Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu says Mr Laker pulled out of the race for personal reasons, and not because of the fallout from his radio interview.
"He has denied that, and my understanding is that's not connected with his decision," he said.
"He's made a personal decision for personal reasons, and I wish him well."
