AU optimistic of a peaceful Somalia

The African Union is optimistic that there could be an end to the 20-year-old Somali war.

The Deputy Special Representative of the AU on Somali, Wafula Wamunyinyi says renewed interest by the international community and boosting of the number of troops in Somalia is an indication that the war torn horn of Africa country could finally get a solution to the strife.

Wamunyinyi said the challenge in dealing with the Somali problem has been lack of funds but the renewed support from the international community could see the country return to normalcy.

Wamunyinyi who briefed the media on the Somali question on Saturday said the African Union is now thinking of how to begin the reconstruction exercise in the now devastated country.

He said the AMISOM troops serving in Somalia have secured key installations and were expanding the area of coverage so as to further reduce the civilian casualties that have occurred due to attacks by the Al Shabaab militias.

"When you drive on most roads within Mogadishu you will notice many people going about their businesses, this is because of the current tranquil in many of these parts that has been established by AMISOM," said Wamunyinyi.

Armed groups opposed to the peace process have taken advantage of the fragile situation to enforce their violent ways against the population using terror tactics including amputation of limbs, summary executions, desecration of burial sites, forced marriages, assassinations and suicide attacks.

But Wamunyinyi is optimistic is optimistic that all this will come to pass and peace will return in the war torn country.
