150 Somalis forcibly deported from Saudi Arabia land at Mogadishu airport

The Saudi Arabian government regularly deports Somalis and other refugees seeking asylum.

Some 150 Somali refugees forcibly deported from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have reached at Mogadishu international airport.

The group, including women and children, looked very exhausted and tired and arrived Wednesday as fighting rocked parts of the capital with sounds of gunfire heard through Mogadishu.

“I was in Saudi jail for three months. I was taken into custody because I can [not] buy the residence document of the country, which is very expensive,” Mohamed Ahmed Ali told journalists at the airport. He stated that he had come down with typhoid while he was in the jail, saying that he didn’t get the treatment he needed from the government.

“Some of my friends and I entered the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia after hazardous trip through the sharks infested Red Sea. Unfortunately we have been sent back from what we ran from,” Ali spelled out.

It is not the first time Saudi Arabia has sent Somali asylum seekers back to their homeland. In December, another 150 Somalis were deported from Saudi Arabia.

The Saudi Arabian government regularly deports Somalis and other refugees seeking asylum, something about which the United Nations has expressed concern.

The United Nations High Commission on Refugees estimates that Saudi Arabia repatriated 4,000 Somalis in 2008.

UNHCR has called on all nations to stop forcibly deporting Somali asylum seekers whose lives might be in danger.
