Somalis still need to send aid to families

Letter

As Senator Amy Klobuchar’s Regional Outreach Director, I wanted to inform your readers that our office has been in close contact with both the U.S. Treasury Department and U.S. State Department to discuss solutions that will assist the Somali community while also ensuring that the funds sent for humanitarian purposes don’t end up in wrong hands.

As Reverend Robert Nelson wrote in his Dec. 14 letter, now more than ever we have an obligation to help the people of Somalia who are suffering from years of devastating famine and drought. This includes making sure that members of Minnesota’s strong Somali community are able to lawfully send critical financial support to their loved ones back home.

The senator and her staff will continue to work with U.S. officials and the Somali community on practical, responsible solutions to this issue.
