Catholic Family Service set up a fund Wednesday to help the Somali victims involved in last week’s fatal rollover accident.

The accident on Interstate 27 killed three and left several critically injured, authorities said. The funds will go toward the accident victims’ medical expenses, agency executive director Nancy Koons said.

“They have gone through so much in one lifetime already,” she said. “They are struggling. It’s devastating, and we really need to support them.”

On Dec. 30, 15 Somali workers were traveling south on I-27 to the Cargill-owned Excel meatpacking plant in Plainview. Two miles south of Canyon, the van swerved to avoid debris in the road, overcorrected and rolled almost three times before coming to a stop on its top, Department of Public Safety officials said. Twelve were ejected.

Three people — Amal Ashur, Omar Abdi Qadir and Abdirizak Addulle Mohamed, 24, all of Amarillo — were killed, and a dozen were transported to Northwest Texas Hospital, public safety officials said.

Troopers said neither those killed nor those critically injured were wearing seat belts.

Nine victims have been released, authorities said.

Three victims — Safiya Barre, Fartun Ali and Cabdikisaag Mugtaor — were in satisfactory condition Wednesday, troopers said.

“I hope that people will understand all of these people in this accident were someone’s son or daughter,” Koons said. “And they need our support.”

To donate, mail a money order or check payable to Refugee Accident Victim Fund to Catholic Family Service, P.O. Box 15127, Amarillo, TX 79105. Donations also are being accepted at all Amarillo National Bank branches and at Catholic Family Service, 200 S. Tyler St.
