A report posted by Sabahi news says on Tuesday this week Al-Shabaab, following an ultimatum issued to telecommunications companies, forced a shutdown of mobile internet service in certain areas.
The areas mentioned include Bulo Burde, Halgan, Mahas and Jalalaqsi. The UN-funded Radio Bar-Kulan is quoted as claiming that internet via Hormud Telecom could not be accessed.
In early January Al-Shabaab banned the use of internet through mobile handsets and fibre optic cables in the country, located in the Horn of Africa. At the time it gave telecommunication companies 15 days to comply.
