Somali Government: Islamic World Failing To Help Somalia

The Transitional Federal Government of Somalia on Thursday accused Islamic countries of failing to help reduce the worsening security situation in the war-devastated nation.

Abdu-Rahman Hajji Adam Ibbi, the former Somali fishing minister now in New York, said if the world didn’t stand to solve Somali problems, terrorist organizations would spread throughout the entire Horn of Africa region.

He also talked about a meeting by foreign ministers of the Islamic world in New York during which, he said, “The ministers focused on [the] Islamic World, including Somali issues and took [a] unified view from it.”

Abdu-Rahman called on Islamic nations to become more involved in the Somalian conflict.

His statement came hours after Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed flew to New York to attend the annual meeting of the United Nations General Assembly.

It is likely that the issue of peacekeeping in Somalia, Sudan and Iran will be mooted in that meeting.

More than 1.5 million Somalis have been forced to their homes as the result of fighting that began in 1991.
