Somalia’s government said al-Shabaab forces left the capital, Mogadishu, this morning following heavy overnight fighting.
“We have been in the end of the last phase of clearing al-Shabaab out of Mogadishu,’’ Abdirahman Omar Osman, a spokesman for Somalia’s Western-backed government, said in a phone interview today from the city. Government forces “compelled them to leave Mogadishu.”
President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed’s administration is holding an emergency meeting to discuss the power vacuum left by the militia’s withdrawal, Osman said.
