The Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU) debates on Thursday in Addis Abeba whether to reinforce the troops of its mission in Somalia while facing the Al Chabab organization.
The government announced its intention to provide troops to the AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), at the conclusion of a meeting among presidents Sheikh Sharif Ahmed of Somalia, Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, and host Mwai Kibaki.
The Kenyans are invited to the discussion table, AU spokesperson Nissa Roguiai told the press shortly before the meeting on Kenyan military involvement in the AMISOM.
The AU force includes 9,700 Ugandan and Burundian soldiers deployed in Mogadishu, the Somali capital, which partially contributed to expel insurgents in August.
The Kenyan army on October 14 entered in southern Somalia to neutralize the Al Chabab guerrillas, accused of kidnapping and terrorist acts.
Subsequently, Nairobi appealed to the international community while requesting support for its military intervention.
According to a diplomatic source, one of the issues to take into account by the AU relates to the possibility of increasing the AMISOM troops in southern Somalia, while just sending Kenyan soldiers.
