US Senator Mark Krik pays a surprise visit to Somalia’s Puntland state

Sources close to the authorities of Puntland say that the deteriorating ties between the international recognized Somali transitional federal (TFG) and Puntland was among the most crucial agendas the US delegation has reached there.

In what Somalis described as a surprise trip, a US delegation led by Senator Mark Krik jetted off to Puntland’s commercial and port town of Bosaso about 1500 kilometers north of Mogadishu, the capital of war-decimated Somalia, sources said.

With the arrival of the American delegation, Security was tightened as a large number of Puntland security forces were deployed in all streets and the neighborhoods of Boaso town, where assassinations and bomb attacks against Puntland have become routine.

After a cordial welcome, the US delegation held key meetings with Abdurrahman Sheikh Mohamoud Farole, the leader Somalia’s semi-autonomous state of Puntland and other top officials.

Sources close to the authorities of Puntland say that deteriorating ties between the international recognized Somali transitional federal (TFG) and Puntland was among the most crucial agenda item. Holding presidential and parliamentary elections were also discussed in the high level meeting.
