A fatal shooting last week was a case of mistaken identity, Edmonton police said Thursday.
Abdi Ali Mohamud, 43, was shot to death June 3 in a confrontation with three people at 106A Avenue and 86th Street.
A 25-year-old man was also shot, but survived.
"Mr. Mohamud was not involved in a high-risk lifestyle, said Det. Dan Jones. "He was not known to police.
"We, at this point, have no reason to believe or we don't know know if he was known to his assailants."
The homicide was well organized and well thought out, Jones said. He would not offer any further details other than to say the method was unusual, one police had not seen before in Edmonton.
At least one, maybe two vehicles were involved, Police do believe the intended target knows he is in danger and are asking he come forward, said Jones.
"It's important to us, for our investigation, we understand who they are and why they were targeted."
Police released no details on the suspects.
The news Mohamud was not the intended target came as no surprise to his friend of 15 years, Hassan Ali.
"He had no criminal record. He had no involvement in criminal activities," he said.
Mohamud is the 13th man of Somali background to be killed in Edmonton in three years; the third of 2011.
