By Hilary Rothing May 31st, 2011

Episode Title: "I'll Let You Know When I Get There"

Writers: Nicole Yorkin and Dawn Prestwich

Director: Ed Bianchi

Previously on "The Killing":

Mayor Adams concocted a believable cover story regarding his alleged affair with a young girl. Linden and Holder got closer to arresting Ahmed only to learn that he and his friend Muhammed were protecting a young Somali girl from an extreme marriage ritual. After finding Rosie's shirt in the laundry, Mitch tried to reach Stan but it was too late. He and Belko kidnapped Ahmed and beat him nearly to death.

Story:

Stan (Brent Sexton) returns home after beating Ahmed. Mitch (Michelle Forbes) tells him that she'd been trying to get a hold of him and shows him Rosie's shirt.

Linden (Mireille Enos) and Holder (Joel Kinnaman) tell Lt. Oakes (Garry Chalk) about the Somali girl Ahmed was protecting and that he is no longer a suspect. When asked if they know where the girl is, the two detectives lie about meeting her. The lieutenant informs them that Ahmed is in critical condition after being kidnapped and beaten.

Holder tries to convince Linden that Ahmed's beating was not her fault. Linden gets a call that Stan Larsen just turned himself in as Holder is about to leave to get some sleep. At the jail, Stan is taken in for processing.

Linden stops by Darren Richmond's (Billy Campbell) apartment to tell him that Ahmed is no longer a suspect and about his condition. She then goes back to the boat, where she finds Regi (Anne Corley) sitting outside, upset over Jack's behavior. In a fit on anger, Linden grabs their stuff and takes Jack (Liam James) to a motel.

Richmond makes a statement to the press about Ahmed's exoneration. He then tells Jamie (Eric Ladin) and Gwen (Kristin Lehman) he wants to go after the city council, which they advise against.

Linden and Holder go over the timeline in Rosie's murder. Linden goes to the jail to talk to Stan and asks him about his mob connections. She also informs him of Ahmed's condition. Holder questions Belko (Brent Sexton III), who lies repeatedly about his past with the mob and his injured hand.

At the courthouse, Stan Larsen pleads guilty to two counts of kidnapping and attempted murder but his lawyer changes the plea to "not guilty." Meanwhile, Linden questions the cabbie who picked Rosie up from Ahmed's house. She learns that Rosie went home from there. After watching the security camera footage from the cab, she and Holder discover that someone was at the Larsen's that night, even though they were out of town.

After questioning Belko and his mother, Linden and Holder learn that although he has an unhealthy fixation with the Larsen family, he didn't kill Rosie. In fact, she left the house after stopping by briefly that night, on her way to meet "Adela."

While looking at footage of Darren on the campaign trail, Gwen and Jamie see him shaking Rosie Larsen's hand. Jamie doesn't want to tell Darren about it but Gwen disagrees.

Mitch answers the phone in Stan's office. It's the bank calling about a bounced check. Mitch learns that their savings account is wiped out.

Linden finds Rick (Callum Keith Rennie) waiting outside her motel room. He's convinced she won't solve the case and can't deal with the demands of her job. He offers her one last chance to leave with him that night. He then gives her a kiss and leaves before she can finish saying "no."

The next day, Linden goes for a run by the water. She notices the sailing schedule for a boat named "Adela" and boards it. As the boat closes in on the shore, she sees a sign for a casino with the same eagle logo as the one on Rosie's keychain.

Breakdown:

There's been talk of "The Killing" getting cancelled and I sure hope it's not true. These first ten episodes of the AMC murder mystery have been like peeling back the layers of a juicy blood orange; tough at first but sweet towards the end. On that note, "I'll Let You Know When I Get There" was a delicious, though unsettling, treat.

Thankfully, the mentally disturbed Belko Royce is not Rosie Larsen's killer. Though he was an obvious suspect, once Ahmed was cleared, there's still so many dots to connect in this case and Belko was but one of them.

One mystery that was solved in this hour is the identity of "Adela." It's a bit surprising that Linden and Holder quickly assumed it was a person. We're led to believe Linden just happened upon the ship while out for a jog which is a bit of a stretch but forgivable.

With Stan Larsen in jail and Belko Royce leading the most depressing existence ever, "The Killing" somehow found a way to get even darker than its earlier episodes. What will become of the Larsens with Stan looking at attempted murder and kidnapping charges and Mitch facing serious financial problems?

And what about Linden and the mess her dedication to the Larsen case has made of her life? Her son is acting out and her fiancee dumped her after issuing an ultimatum Linden just couldn't go along with.

And then there's poor Bennet Ahmed, who certainly didn't look good on paper but whose intentions were nothing but admirable.

The only thing that seems certain at this point is that "The Killing" will not have a "happy ending." It may be incredibly satisfying conclusion but the impact of the dark, emotionally taxing journey its taken us on will linger for some time.
