South Africa: Ramaphosa residents back Somali shop owners

Residents at the Ramaphosa informal settlement on Gauteng’s East Rand have come out in support of Somali shop owners who are being forced to close their businesses.

Foreign shop owners said they are being threatened and are blaming a small group of instigators.

Somali shop owner Siyat Sheik Ahmed said a group of around eight people came to his store on Wednesday morning and told him to close down. He said this was not the first time he was threatened.

But this time around he and other foreign shop owners have the support of Ramaphosa residents.

The community rallied behind them because they want them to stay in the informal settlement.

Speaking to Eyewitness News, one resident said foreign owned shops offer cheaper prices.

Police were monitoring the situation and no incidents of violence have been reported in the township.
