EU naval officials say Somali pirates seize small oil tanker headed for northern Somalia

The European Union Naval force says Somali pirates have hijacked a small oil tanker.

Cmdr. Harrie Harrison said Sunday the ship was hijacked Saturday. He says the vessel was en route from the United Arab Emirates to the port of Berbera in Somalia’s breakaway northern province of Somaliland. He gave no further details.

Andrew Mwangura of the East African Seafarers Assistance Program says the ship is called MV Jubba XX.

Piracy has grown in recent years in war-ravaged, drought-stricken Somalia. The Horn of Africa nation has not had a functioning central government for more than 20 years.
