Yemeni coast guard rescues 69 Somalis after boat capsizes

The Yemeni coast guard rescued 69 Somali migrants off of Bir Ali Coast after their boat capsized, Yemen Times reported Thursday (September 13th).

The migrants were using a small fishing boat, which was not suitable for the journey, said coastal forces Operations Manager Shuja'a Mahdi. High waves made travel difficult, and the boat capsized when it hit a rock, according to a statement from the Interior Ministry. Mahdi said Yemeni forces often have to save Somali migrants from drowning, as they overload the boats.

Of the 73 Somalis traveling on the boat, 69 were rescued and four drowned. The deceased were buried with the knowledge of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. The rescued migrants are now being held at the Jawl al Rai'da refugee camp before they are transferred to the main Kharz refugee camp in Lahj governorate.
