Minneapolis: St. Paul police will investigate melee at Cedar-Riverside caucus - TwinCities.com

An investigation into a raucous DFL caucus that dissolved into a shoving match earlier this month in Minneapolis' Cedar-Riverside neighborhood will be investigated by the St. Paul Police Department.

Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges asked Police Chief Janee Harteau to allow St. Paul to handle the case "to avoid any perception of potential conflict of interest and to ensure transparency and impartiality," according to a Friday news release.
On Feb. 4, DFL House District 60B precinct caucus organizers shut down the event after a verbal altercation dissolved into pushing and shoving during the process of delegate selection, Minneapolis police said.
The caucus, at the Brian Coyle Community Center, was shut down after 45 minutes. No one was arrested.
District 60B is represented by Rep. Phyllis Kahn. She is being challenged by Mohamud Noor, a member of the Minneapolis school board who is also interim executive director of the Confederation of Somali Community in Minnesota, which is based at the Coyle Center.
Earlier this week, the caucus was held again at a different location by outside organizers. Noor will send 28 delegates to the Senate District 60 convention April 5, while Kahn will have 15 delegates. Delegates at that meeting will have an opportunity to bestow the DFL Party's endorsement.
Kahn's political turf has changed during her 42 years in office. It's now home to a large East African population, many of whom share Noor's Somali heritage.
