2011 did not start very well for 43 African migrants who in attempt to elope from their country found their death in the seas off the coast of Yemen. This is not the first drowning case for migrants’ trying to escape to better lands in the Middle East and the West. Cases like this have been more and more frequent as people in search of a better life do not consider the risks they expose themselves to and try to escape in very unsteady boats, over crowded most of the times.
It was the same for the 43 people who perished in the heavy and turbulent seas off the coast of Yemen. Three Somali people were rescued from this vessel but the other 43 men found their death on the bottom of the sea. There were two boats heading for Yemen but apparently the second boat went missing. In the second boat there were about 35 to 40 Ethiopian migrants and it is believed that the strong sea winds and the currents might have carried them away on the sea. More information was expected today about the fate of the missing second boat. The vessels had left Djibouti a few hours before the tragedy happened. It seems that the 43 death people became panicky after the engine of the vessel had been caught in some fishing nets. The vessel capsized due to the passenger movement causing them to drown in the dangerous waters.
Djibouti has become quite a transit area in the last years for migrants trying to escape their poor existence and heading for better places. Most often migrants are smuggled into other regions by human traficants who take advantage of their despair and transport them in dangerous devices.
