Somali pirates back to Indian Coastline with Sri lanka help?

A threat to the Thoothukudi – Colombo ferry service has arisen from Somali pirates harbored by Sri Lanka militia for their own agenda. A joint military meeting with China and India has made the former an undependable ally. Indian Navy and Coast Guard are concerned about two attempts by Somali pirates to hijack ships sailing off the Kerala coastline off Thiruvanthapuram. This has more or less confirmed the suspicions that Sri Lankan shores are being used by the Pirates as reported earlier by TruthDive.com.

London-based International Maritime Bureau’s Piracy Reporting Centre said that the first incident took place at 8.11 am Saturday, about 15 nautical miles or 28 km west of Kerala Thiruvananthapuram. The vessel enforced anti-piracy preventive measures and sent an SSAS (Ship Security Alert System) alert. Later a naval helicopter arrived at the location.

According to IB reports the Somali skiffs operating in Indian waters when the season is not good means that their fishing in these waters is linked to a neighboring country that is harboring them. The launch of a private cruise service to Andaman’s among other destinations could be in danger including the Thoothukoodi-Colombo ferry service.

The International Maritime Bureau aware of the escalating level of piracy, wanted to provide a free service to the seafarer and established the 24 hour IMB Piracy Reporting Centre (PRC) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
