Famine in parts of southern Somalia is likely to spread in coming days, the United Nations has warned.
The worst drought in 60 years has already affected 12.4 million people in the Horn of Africa - including parts of Ethiopia, Djibouti, Kenya and Uganda.
It has been predicted that 400,000 children are at risk of starvation in Somalia alone.
So far, only half of the £1.5bn the UN appealed for has been pledged so the biggest Somali community in the US is helping to raise money.
The group in Minneapolis have said the cash will go directly to teams distributing aid and will not reach the al Shabab militia.
The al Qaeda-affiliated gunmen have continued to restrict aid into areas they control.
The UN said its World Food Programme "only has partial access" to some areas of Somalia because of the group.
The UN has described the country, where a civil war has been going on for 20 years, as facing the most severe humanitarian crisis in the world.
It added that a failure to provide a long-term solution to famine should shame the world.
