Somalia: A Declining Situation And An Intervention That Raises More Questions

As has been broadcasted by media organizations around the world, two French citizens have been kidnapped from the city of Mogadishu. Although there has been no clear information as to who the perpetrators were, that is not the most important question to be raised here. During their stay in Somalia, the kidnapped French citizens were recognized as journalists but it was later on revealed that they were ranked members of the French security forces that were in the country to provide the so called transitional 'government' with military and security training and services. Now the world has been forced to raise the following questions:
· What were these western individuals doing in Somalia and for what purpose? And why were they French?

· Being security agents, why had these individuals posed as journalists?

· What is the significance of the military and security services that was given to the transitional 'government'? What was the objective behind such an intervention and under what legal grounds can it be justified?

· Under what political premise has the transitional 'government' been given legal recognition?

· Who does France's security and military intervention in Somalia represent? Was it France's own individual decision or was it done in representation of the Security Council or the EU?
Somalia continues to be a country surrounded by endless unanswered questions.
