Local Somali soccer club presents sponsor with trophy

As a way to say thanks, the Rochester Somali Soccer Club — winners of the Kick-Out Indoor Soccer Tournament in Columbus, Ohio, earlier this month — presented their tournament entry sponsors Foodlink Inc. with a trophy Tuesday.

The fourth annual Kick-Out Indoor Soccer Tournament hosted 20 teams from across the country. All teams consisted of players originally from Africa; the goal of the tournament is to promote brotherhood and togetherness among Somali youths.

The local soccer club is made up of 20 Somali refugees, ages 18 through 21.

“I am very proud of all our players,” Mohamud Abdirashid from the Somali Community Outreach and Education Center said in a statement. “This is the first time Rochester has won this tournament, and the players worked very hard to claim this title.”

Tom Ferraro, executive director and founder of Foodlink, said he “was introduced to the Rochester Somali Soccer Club through Foodlink’s work to build urban agriculture in Rochester. … The local Somali community is dedicated to our city, and Foodlink Foundation wanted to give them an opportunity to showcase their talents in this special tournament.”

Foodlink Foundation sponsored the Rochester Somali Soccer Club as part of ongoing efforts to support the growing refugee population in Rochester.
