June 26, 2011 - Somaliland learnt from losing independence

Somaliland president said that although the people of Somaliland lost their independence in 1960, they have gained a lot experience in order to preserve their nation. The president said this in a speech he delivered at a ceremony held at the presidential palace Sunday in the wake of this important occasion of 51 anniversary when Somaliland gained its independence from the British colony on 26th June 1960.

The ceremony was attended by Somaliland vice president Mr. Abdirahman Abdillahi Ismail ( Saylici ), the speakers of Parliament and senate, members of cabinet ministers, UCID chairman Mr. Faysal Ali Warabe, civil society organizations and other honorable guests.

Somaliland President Mr. Ahmed Mohamed Mohamud Siilaanyo spoke at the ceremony and he talked deeply of the importance of this historical day and said, “I salute the people who attended and I welcome and congratulate you on this occasion of 26th June which is a great a historical day for Somaliland. This is the place where the first Somali flag was hoisted. This was the time we gained our independence from the British colony which colonized us for more than eighty years. Somaliland was struggling for its independence at that time and this created a wind of freedom to start in African countries and we became part of that movement.”
