A Somali woman charged with slashing another woman with a meat hook a little more than a year ago at Greeley’s meatpacking plant will spend the next two years on probation for the crime.
Ayan Mohamed, 27, was arrested March 24, 2011, on suspicion of second-degree assault, a felony that would normally be punishable by two to six years in prison. The attack occurred at the JBS meatpacking plant in north Greeley.
Earlier this year, Mohamed reached a deal with prosecutors to plead guilty to misdemeanor third-degree assault with a stipulated probation sentence. The felony charged against her was dropped in the deal.
Weld District Court Judge Thomas Quammen on Friday granted the probation sentence but also required she perform 100 hours of community service and complete anger management counseling.
According to Greeley police reports, Mohamed called fellow worker, Fartun Abdullahi, 20, to the second-story locker room at the JBS meatpacking plant on March 17, 2011. Abdullahi told police Mohamed pulled out a sharpened meat hook from behind her back, and struck her in the forehead and eyelid, grabbed her hair and began striking her in the back with the blunt end of the meat hook holder.
Mohamed told police initially that Abdullahi attacked her, according to police reports, but other workers came forward confirming Abdullahi’s story.
