Speaker of Somali parliament reopens National University

The speaker of parliament of the Federal Republic of Somalia Mohamed Sheikh Osman Jawari has officially opened the first academic year of Somali national University in Mogadishu on Tuesday,after closed the University 24 years ago because of civil war and internal strife.
The speaker described Somali National University as the backbone of the country’s education as it has produced most of the leaders of the country.

Mr. Jawari urged the students to fully benefit from the opportunity in hand and take an active role of rebuilding the nation.
On his side the minister for culture and higher education Duale Adan said the federal government is committed to develop and promote higher education of the country and called the students to work hard.

Somalia’s cabinet unanimously endorsed the government’s plan to refurbish and re-open the Somali National University during meeting in Mogadishu.

Somali National University was established in 1974, but closed down and was heavily damaged by the civil war after the central government collapsed in 1991.
