U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says she worries “all the time” about Somalia, which is largely controlled by armed Islamic insurgents.
Clinton told a meeting of African officials in Washington Tuesday that cutting the threat of extremism in Somalia, expanding the peace process and containing the extremists is one of her hardest jobs.
She said the State Department is encouraging members of Somali communities in the United States to increase what she calls positive engagement with their homeland.
Al-Shabab Islamic insurgents control much of southern and central Somalia, while Somali forces and African Union peacekeepers struggle to keep them from turning the country into a strict Islamic state.
