A documentary about the reception of Somali refugees in Shelbyville is being screened across the country over the next week and a half.
"Welcome to Shelbyville" chronicles the difficulties some longtime residents have in accepting the changes that immigration is bringing to their community. It also follows the evolution of some residents' attitudes as they get to know the Somalis through shared meals and dialogues.
Many of the meetings in the film between the Shelbyville natives and the Somali immigrants came about through the nonprofit Welcoming Tennessee initiative.
Thirteen showings of the film are planned around the country between Oct. 17 and 28. They include an Oct. 28 screening in Nashville.
"Welcome to Shelbyville" will be shown nationwide on Public Broadcasting Service channels this spring.
