The Transitional Federal Government of Somalia on Tuesday called for militant groups in Somalia to lay down their arms and come to the negotiation table after government troops seized new positions from hard-line Islamist insurgents in Mogadishu.
Abdurrahman Omar Osman, the information minister of Somalia, urged militant groups Al Shabaab and Hizbul Islam to join the peace process and stop fighting.
Osman signaled the government came to power through reconciliation and negotiation and it is ready to talk with every Somali group.
“Our people got tired from endless war and now they need peace, we must try to create an atmosphere so the displaced Somalis would return to their houses,” Osman told the government-owned Radio Mogadishu.
After days of fighting with radical Islamist insurgents, Somali government troops have advanced into new insurgents’ areas in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu.
The statement of the information minister comes as Somali forces backed by AMISOM took over the Hodan district of the city, which had been an Islamist stronghold place for the last five months.
