Diarrhea outbreak killing Somali children

At least 10 children are dead and 20 others in critical condition due to an outbreak of diarrhea in Somalia's Middle Shabelle region, officials say.

One of the elders of Mahaday district told Somalia's Shabelle Media Network Wednesday that most of the dead children were under the age of 15.

Sheik Mohamud Sheik Ali says three of his own children have died from acute watery diarrhea that is spreading in the region due to a lack of available healthcare.

Shabelle Media says reports indicate the outbreak was caused by drinking contaminated water from the Shabelle River that passes through the town of Mahaday and the villages surrounding it.
