FRENCH HOSTAGE DUO HELD BY TWO ISLAMIST GROUPS: SOMALI MINISTER

The two French agents kidnapped in Somalia are in good health but have been split up and are being held by separate Islamist groups Mogadishu, a Somali minister told France 24 television Thursday.

Social affairs minister Mohammed Ali Ibrahim told the network that theSomali prime minister had been able to speak to one of the two hostages bytelephone and said that both were thought to be in good health.

"The Shebab party took one of the two hostages and the other is in thehands of the Hezb al-Islam, but we're in negotiations with them and we'rehoping for a positive result, Ali Ibrahim said, speaking in Arabic.

"The prime minister was able to speak to one of the two hostages to reassure him," he added. "The French and American embassies in Nairobi havecontacted Hezb al-Islam official Assan Aweis to talk about this matter.

"The two Frenchmen are currently in Mogadishu and as far as we know theyare in good health," he said, speaking four days after the French government security advisers were snatched from their Mogadishu hotel rooms.
