Payback for Somali Pirates

The Dutch marines decided to take the law into their own hands when one their ships was seized by Somali pirates.

The Dutch Special Forces received a call for help from a captured German freighter, MV Taipan. Upon receiving the call, Capt Hans Lodder decided to bypass all the European Union’s red tape and take back the freighter from the pirates themselves. He went to his own government to get authorization to take the ship by force because there would have been no way to have recaptured the freighter had he waited for the European Union’s permission.

Though the task was dangerous, they accomplished their goal and managed to not only take back their ship and its 15-man crew, they took 10 Somali pirates captive.

In a scene that looked like it was taken from a movie, a team of six special force marines repelled onto the captured ship. Capt Lodder told The Associated Press, “The pirates surrendered the moment they saw the marines. We just told my force commander we would operate under national command until after the boarding. We kept everyone in the EU informed of everything we did.”

According to the Associated Press, the pirates will likely be turned over to German or Dutch officials for a piracy trial.
