Red Cross: War injuries to Somali women, children rising sharply

The conflict in Somalia is taking a drastically sharper toll on the local population, the International Committee of the Red Cross warned Thursday.

Two key referral hospitals for war casualties in Mogadishu admitted 5,000 war-wounded patients - including 1,900 women and children - during the first nine months of this year.

This is a 25 per cent increase on the same period last year, and a 72 per cent rise for the women and children, the ICRC reported.

'Every civilian who can is trying to flee bullet-scarred Mogadishu in search of safety,' the humanitarian organisation said in the latest research note on the East African country.

However, living conditions in refugee camps have 'further deteriorated' and people have to return to the war-torn capital Mogadishu to earn a living, no matter how meager.

In addition, some aid groups have been recently tossed out of the country, making humanitarian relief efforts more complex.
