Repeat drunk's third court hearing in a week

A CAMPERDOWN Somali immigrant rearrested just six hours after being released on bail has been remanded in custody to face an attempted armed robbery charge in a Melbourne court today.

Abdulaahi Umar, 26, of Cole Street, was "reluctantly" released on bail in Warrnambool by magistrate Jonathan Klestadt mid-afternoon last Monday, despite police opposition, after which Mr Umar let out a loud celebratory yell while leaving court.

However, he called police from a telephone at the Camperdown railway station about 10pm the same night and was arrested again for being drunk and breaching his bail conditions.

Senior Constable Andrew Raven of Camperdown police told the Warrnambool Magistrates Court that Mr Umar had been arrested the previous Friday after police were called about 9pm.

Mr Umar was refused entry and asked to leave the alcohol-licensed town hall. There were a large number of people in Camperdown for a car show.

Senior Constable Raven said Mr Umar was forced to the ground after police located a knife in his jacket. Another kitchen knife was also found in his jacket before he was lodged in police cells.

He is due to appear in the Sunshine Magistrates Court this week on a charge of attempted armed robbery which related to allegedly trying to rob a 75-year-old man leaving a doctor's rooms with two alleged co-offenders.

Victorian Chief Magistrate Ian Gray, who was sitting at Warrnambool last week, denied Mr Umar bail.

He said Mr Umar was an unacceptably high risk of reoffending and it was clear the accused man had a problem with alcohol.

Mr Umar has previously been served with 11 of the new infringement notice for being drunk. Each fine is $487.

Mr Gray said Mr Umar's prior convictions included some very serious charges and he needed help with his alcohol problems.

Mr Umar was remanded in custody until today to appear in the Sunshine Magistrates Court.
