The government of Somalia has reiterated its commitment to the development of young people as the backbone of the country’s economic and social future.Making the commitment on Thursday as Somalia observed the 71st anniversary of the founding of the Somali Youth League, Prime Minster Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed said his government is committed to empowering the youth and ensuring they take their rightful place in the society.
"I urge all our youth to carry with them that spirit and to be part of our nation’s reconstruction and development" he told thousands of youth who had gathered at Mogadishu’s Konis Stadium to mark the day.
The event organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports was marked by cultural performances including traditional dances and poetry recitals celebrating the place of youth in Somali society.
Similar events were also held in Hiran Province with PM Ahmed encouraging them to stay committed to the efforts of rebuilding their communities.
The SYL was founded in 1943 by 13 young Somalis as an organ to give direction to the clamour for independence and is widely regarded as a symbol of resilience and national pride by citizens.
