Gunmen kill Somali lawmaker in drive-by shooting, police say - US News
Gunmen shot and killed a Somali lawmaker in a drive-by shooting in the Somali capital on Monday, a police official said.
The attack on Abdullahi Qayad Barre took place in an area close to the presidential palace in Mogadishu, said Capt. Mohamed Hussein. Gunmen traveling in a car sprayed bullets into the lawmaker's car as he was heading to parliament, he said.
The al-Qaida-linked terrorist group al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack, the latest in a string of violence targeting the country's legislators for assassination.
Al-Shabab militants killed five members of the Somali parliament last year, while two others survived similar attacks.
Al-Shabab, which is fighting to impose Shariah law in Somalia, has carried out many attacks against government officials, African Union peacekeepers and United Nations staff in a deadly campaign of suicide bombings and gun attacks.
Militant attacks have continued despite the ouster in 2011 of al-Shabab from its bases in Mogadishu.
