The security guards of the Spokesman of Hawiye Clan Elders Ahmed Derie Ali, and unknown gunmen exchanged gunfire in Bakaro Market overnight while they were escorting the spokesman, officials said on Tuesday.
Ahmed Derie accused al-Shabab of being behind the attack against him and named some al-Shabab officials in the capital.
“We discovered that Hassan Afrah and Ali Dhere, al-Shabab officials planned in a meeting in Mogadishu to kill six people including me Ahmed Derie, Mohamed Hassan Haad, the chairman of Hawiye Elders, Abshir Ba’adle, and Osman Gure-two influential poets who are famous in Somalia,” Ahmed Derie said.
“They sent 16 assassins from their group into Bakaro Market and gave the pictures of those people I mentioned to kill by sight,” he added.
Ahmed Derie also accused al-Shabab of being behind the assassinations in Mogadishu and he called for the Somali people to defend them.
The Islamic Courts Union had accused al-Shabab the killing of a lawmaker and Islamist commander in Mogadishu before.
There is no comment from al-Shabab about the statement of the spokesman yet.
