Somali president: Piracy violates Islam

Pirates preying on commercial shipping off the coast of Somalia are violating Islamic principles and endangering the country, the new Somali president said.
President Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed, in an interview with Voice of America, also called on insurgents to lay down their arms. He said that those who refuse are trying to destroy Somalia.

Somalia has had no real government since 1991. Sharif, who built up a regime with some stability in the Mogadishu area, was overthrown by the Ethiopian Army but became president in January with a parliamentary vote.

Sharif said that the pirates are harming Somali culture and drawing naval vessels from many countries to the region, VOA reported.

The parliamentary decision approving Sharia law throughout Somalia has deprived the insurgency of any justification, Sharif said.
