Somalia: Islamic Courts Union accuses al-Shabab of killing senior official

The Islamic Courts Union has accused al-Shabab the killing of a senior Islamist official who was killed in Mogadishu, officials said on Wednesday.

Mohamed Mohamud Jimale Agaweyne, a senior Islamic Courts Union official was killed in K4 area in Mogadishu by three unknown gunmen on Tuesday.

Abdirahim Isse Adow, a military spokesman of the Islamic Courts Union that works with the Somali government accused strongly al-Shabab of being behind the killing of Agaweyne.

“Agaweyne was killed by al-Shabab faction as they used to kill the civilians before and we tell the people that we will not sit and wait. We will react,” said Abrahim Isse Adow.

Al-Shabab denied that they were behind the killing of the Islamist official but there is no comment from them about the killing of the latest victim Mohamed Mohamud Jimale Agaweyne yet.

Two senior Islamist officials one of them lawmaker were killed in Mogadishu last week by unknown gunmen.

Tension arose between the Islamist groups in the capital since the assassinations of the latest killing of Islamist officials in Mogadishu.

Al-Shabab was the military wing of the Islamic Courts Union before they were ousted by the Ethiopian troops in 2006, since then they were fighting against the Ethiopian troops and the Somali government.

The Ethiopian troops withdrew from Somalia in mid January in 2009 after the Somali government and the Alliance for the Re-liberation of Somalia agreed to form a unity government

The Islamic Courts Union joined the government after its leader Sheik Sharif Shiek Ahmed was elected president in neighboring Djibouti by the enlarged parliament.
