Somali pirates seized a Yemeni tanker in the Gulf of Aden on Sunday but the vessel was empty of oil cargo, a Yemeni government official said.
Yemeni coast guards clashed with the pirates at sea "in an attempt to free the vessel. Some of them (guards) were wounded in the attempt", the official told Reuters.
The tanker, named Qana, has a capacity of 3,000 tonnes and was seized off the coast of the Arabian Peninsula country, the official said.
Yemen is a small producer of oil and exports 200,000 barrels per day to Asian and other countries.
