Somalia: Government demands the immediate release of captain

the Somali government has strongly condemned the increasing level of piracy activity on the coast of Somalia and urged the Somali pirates to unconditionally release the American captain Richard Philips captured on Wednesday, officials said on Saturday.

The Prime Minister of Somalia, Omar Abdirashid Sharmake demanded from the pirates to release the American captain.

The TFG said it wanted to see the piracy problem to come to an end in a peaceful manner.

“The piracy action is causing major concern for both the world and the Somalis and may create difficulties for the international community to respond on the Government’s humanitarian appeal which was launched yesterday by the Council of Ministers,” said Prime Minister Sharmake.

“These will also negatively affect the economic situation of the region and Somalia,” he added.

The Somali government called upon the concerned Somali traditional elders and leaders of those areas where the captive is held to intervene in order to secure the release of the captive captain

The Somali Government also assured the captain’s family that the government is working hard to make sure he regains his freedom the soonest possible.

The Somali government would like to emphasis that the international community cannot tackle the problem of piracy without effectively developing the capacity of Somalia’s national institutions to take responsibility and ownership for their state security
