Efforts are said to be under way at the Somali presidency in enlisting a national force for the Federal Somali Government in the last few days. The registration of these soldiers are being carried out by officials from both sides, the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia and the Islamic Courts who are planning to combine these forces and move them into the same camps in the capital.
Government officials have told Somaliland Press that the registration exercise is also under way at secret locations in the Somali capital. The Somali government, which does not currently have a strong military force, is to be backed by a national force which will tighten the security of the locations where the federal government operates.
The Somali Prime Minister, Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke, recently issued a statement in which he said the government will speed up the formation of a national force that will be responsible for the security of the employees of government and the wider general public.
Source close to the presidency have said that income from the Mogadishu port has been allocated to fund the salaries of the national force that is to be formed in the country. A committee to ascertain the amount of revenue collected at the Mogadishu port has been operating at the port in the last few days.
