Three businessmen have been arrested by an Islamic insurgent group in southern Somalia in connection with tobacco trading.
Sheikh Bishar Adam Hassan, Al Shabaab’s chairman of the Gedo region in southern Somalia, Thursday said the businessmen were detained as the group’s fighters conducted operations in the town of Bardhere.
He said the businessmen were seized in El Ilan village of Bardhere, while they had been carrying tobacco in a car and traveling stealthily in the region.
“The Islamic court of Al Shabaab in Gedo region sentenced these three businessmen to buy three AK 47 rifles with [ammunition] magazines,” Hassan told reporters.
"Our fighters are still conducting search operations against drugs which can hamper man’s mental health," Hassan added.
Over the last few months, Al Shabaab has banned the sale of qat, or khat, as well as hashish and tobacco.
In August, Al Shabaab, who controls much territory in southern and central Somalia including the capital city Mogadishu, declared a large-scale offensive to eliminate what it called invading African Christians and their apostate government. More than 100 people were killed in that offensive. Fighting is continuing.
