Somali pirates have released a Taiwan fishing boat along-with its 28-member crew nearly eight months after it was hijacked off the coast of the Maldives.
Sri Lanka's Foreign Ministry, which helped the Council of Agriculture and three international anti-piracy groups to rescue the vessel Taiyuan 227 and the fishermen, said they reached safely in capital Colombo on Wednesday.
Officials of Taiwan's trade office in India have reportedly left for Colombo to meet the crew.
The pirates seized the vessel on May 6 last year while it was sailing west of the Indian Ocean island nation of Maldives. The crew-members hail from China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Kenya and Mozambique.
During captivity, the pirates renamed the boat and used it to launch attacks on other foreign vessels off the waters of Somalia.
The ministry did not disclose if the release was made possible by paying any ransom.
