Kibaki urges Somalis to forge unity

President Kibaki has urged newly-elected Somali President Sheikh Ahmed Sharif to reach out to all groups and include them in his government.

Development and peace and security in Somalia would only come about when its people agree to place their personal differences aside, President Kibaki said.

He assured the Somali leader that Kenya would continue supporting peace efforts in Somalia and called for the implementation of the Joint Commission of Cooperation between the two countries launched in March 2008.

Road map

President Kibaki, who was speaking at a meeting with the Somali President on Monday, congratulated him on his election.

Sheikh Ahmed briefed President Kibaki on recent political developments in Somalia, particularly the formation of the government and appraised him on his road map to stabilise Somalia.

“We will speak to those who want peace in our country,” said the Somali leader.

Sheikh Ahmed was elected president on January 31, this year, following the resignation of Mr Abdullahi Yusuf as president. (PPS)
