Officials: Terror worries tied to Midwest Somali community

Counterterrorism officials are telling Congress that an expected merger between al-Qaida and a terror group in Somalia could increase the danger to the U.S.

Officials from the National Counterterrorism Center and the FBI say it will take time for the Somali group al-Shabab to extend its focus beyond East Africa and mirror al-Qaida's vision of global jihad. But they also note that the group has recruited young Somali-American men from Minnesota to return to Somalia and join their fight.

The officials say it doesn't appear that the teens are being trained to set up sleeper cells in the U.S., at least for now. They say it's more likely they are being used as "cannon fodder" in Somalia.

The FBI official acknowledged that the agency is investigating the disappearance of Somali-American teens in the Minneapolis area.
